It’s been an exciting couple of weeks at Uplifter. We’re back in our North Vancouver office after a week of exhibiting, presenting and sponsoring the 2020 Canadian Sport for Life Summit. Here are some highlights of the event, plus a quick recap of our ‘Celebrating Effective Safe Sport Systems’ presentation, which focused on risk management for sport organizations and clubs.
What the Canadian Sport for Life Summit is all about
The Sport for Life Canadian Summit brings together leaders who work to enhance the quality of sport and physical activity in Canada. Uplifter was proud to be a gold sponsor of this year’s event.
The event was well attended, with more than 500 guests including sector leaders and representatives from sport organizations across Canada. Attendees came together to celebrate the success of ongoing sport development, united by the common goals of strengthening communities, boosting sporting achievement and improving risk management in sport.
The Sport for Life Summit promotes collaboration as a means to achieve these shared goals, and we were proud to be involved in such an important event for the Canadian sporting community.
Uplifter’s international reception
The summit kicked off with Uplifter’s International Reception. Over 10 nations were represented from all corners of the world, including Guatemala, the British Virgin Islands and Egypt. We were honoured to hear from several guest speakers, including Canadian Olympian Catriona Le May Doan, who emphasized the importance of encouraging children to take part in multiple sports to prevent injury and burnout and to improve overall mental and physical health.
We were also excited to learn about an initiative launched by Sport for Life in collaboration with Karim Ghabbour, CEO of the Egyptian manufacturing company MCV: the design and build of a world-class sports academy for children just outside of Cairo. The 12+ acre facility will include two 25-metre pools, shallow pools, running tracks, tennis courts, soccer fields and more.
Celebrating effective systems: safe sport
Our presentation covered the factors that shape safe sport policies and procedures:
- The end users: athletes, parents, coaches and officials
- The suppliers: timing, learning management and technology systems
- The governing bodies: federations, insurance companies, and national policies and laws
The presentation focused on the athlete registration process, including waiver collection, age verification and de-duplication. The emphasis was on building safe standards into your registration processes and keeping a consistent record of progress over time.
At the end of the session, participants — including representatives from national and provincial bodies — completed a risk management audit, created in collaboration with our insurance partner Markel. The audit helped organizations review their athlete registration and their coach and official licensing procedures to see how effectively they mitigate risk.
